Try an empty supermarket trolley — it flies forward with a small push. Now fill it with groceries. Give it the same push. It moves much more slowly. Why?
Because the mass increased. And this is exactly what Newton’s Second Law explains.
The Law
The net force acting on an object equals its mass multiplied by the acceleration it gains:
Three Key Points
- More force → more acceleration: double the push, double the acceleration (mass held constant)
- More mass → less acceleration: double the mass, halve the acceleration (force held constant)
- Direction matters: F and a are both vectors — force forward → acceleration forward
Real-World Examples
🚗 Car braking: When you brake, friction from the tyres acts opposite to the direction of motion. The stronger the force (harder braking), the greater the negative acceleration — you stop sooner.
🚀 Rocket: Exhaust gases shoot backward, creating a forward force. More fuel burned (bigger F) and decreasing mass (smaller m) → acceleration grows.
⚽ Kicking a ball: Kick harder (bigger F) and the ball travels faster. A heavier ball (bigger m) travels more slowly for the same kick.
