An important question 🤔: In the previous lesson, we saw that a gas produces work during expansion. But a gas can’t expand forever — it eventually reaches the end of the cylinder! So how does the engine continuously produce work? The answer is a brilliant idea: return the gas to its initial state and start over! This repetition is called a thermodynamic cycle. Let’s dive in 👇

The Problem: One-Time Expansion Isn’t Enough 🚫

Imagine you expand a gas to extract work. Great, but then what? The gas has expanded and can’t continue. To extract work again, you must return it to its initial state — meaning you have to compress it again.

But wait! Compressing the gas itself requires work (you have to do work on it). So is the whole story futile? 🤨 No! And this is where the beauty of the concept lies.

The Brilliant Idea: The Cycle 🔁

A thermodynamic cycle is a series of processes that takes the gas from its initial state and returns it to that same initial state. It’s like a loop that closes 🔄.

Key point: If you return the gas in such a way that the work required for compression is less than the work you obtained during expansion, then you get a positive net work in each cycle! 🎯 And since the cycle repeats, you can obtain this work infinitely many times.

This is exactly what a car engine does: each cycle produces a small amount of net work, and with the rapid repetition of cycles (thousands of times per minute), it moves the car 🚗.

Net Work = Area Inside the Loop! 📐

Remember we said work = area under the P-V diagram? Now, for a cycle:

The net work of a cycle is equal to the area enclosed by the cycle loop on the P-V diagram.

That is, when you plot the cycle, it forms a closed loop, and the area inside this loop is exactly equal to the net work you obtain in each turn 🎯. The larger the loop, the more work.

Important Note: Internal Energy in a Cycle 🔄

A nice point: since the cycle returns to its initial state, the initial and final temperatures are the same. And since (for an ideal gas) internal energy depends only on temperature:

$$Delta U_{text{cycle}} = 0$$

This means that in a complete cycle, the internal energy does not change at all! Therefore, according to the first law, the total net work comes from the heat supplied to the system. A clean conversion of heat into work 🎯.

My Casual Summary 🎁

For an engine to continuously produce work, the gas must return to its initial state after expansion — this repetition is a thermodynamic cycle. If the work done during compression is less than the work done during expansion, we get positive net work in each cycle. The net work is equal to the area inside the cycle loop on the P-V diagram. And since the cycle returns to the initial state, $Delta U = 0$ and the total work is supplied by heat 🎯.

“Did You Know?” Box 💡

Your car’s gasoline engine follows a well-known cycle called the “Otto cycle” (named after German inventor Nikolaus Otto), while the diesel engine follows another cycle called the “Diesel cycle” (named after Rudolf Diesel). 🚗 Both rely on the same thermodynamic cycle principle; only the process details differ — which is why their sound, fuel consumption, and power output vary! Even airplane engines and power plant turbines have their own specific cycles. The entire world of engines is built on this simple “closed loop” idea 🔁.
