Physics is built on measurement. You can describe nature with elegant words, but until you can pin a property to a number and compare with what a theory predicts, you don't have physics — you have a story.

From day one, keep three things mentally separate:

A statement like "the rod is long" is useless. "The rod is 2.34 m long" is physics — a quantity (length), a number (2.34), and a unit (m), all together.

Why this matters in practice. When you write F = ma, every symbol carries a unit. If your final answer comes out in kg·m^2/s^3 but you wanted a force (N = kg·m/s^2), something went wrong upstream. Units are your free debugging tool.
