An engineering trick 💭: Can you multiply a capacitor’s capacitance just by placing a piece of plastic or paper between its plates? Yes! And this is exactly what is done in almost all real-world capacitors. Let’s see how it works 👇

What is a dielectric and what does it do? 🧱

If we fill the space between the capacitor plates with an insulating material (like paper or plastic), that insulator is called a dielectric. Michael Faraday (1837) discovered that this increases the capacitor’s capacitance by a factor known as the dielectric constant (symbol $kappa$, kappa). If the capacitance of the capacitor without a dielectric is $C_0$:

$$ C = kappa, C_۰ tag{۱-۱۶} $$

Some dielectric constants (at 20°C):

Why does the capacitance increase? 🔬

There are two types of dielectrics:

In both cases, the induced charges on the dielectric slightly reduce the field inside the capacitor. Now, since the capacitor’s charge is constant but the voltage ($V$) has decreased, according to $C = Q/V$, the capacitance increases. ✅

🤔 Question 1-6 (from the book): We connect a charged capacitor to a voltmeter. When a dielectric is inserted between the plates, the potential difference decreases. Why? (Hint: The charge is constant, the field decreases, so V decreases, and since C=Q/V, the capacitance increases.)

Accounting for the dielectric, the complete formula for a parallel-plate capacitor becomes:

$$ C = kappa,varepsilon_۰frac{A}{d} tag{۱-۱۸} $$

The same simulation, this time with a dielectric 🎮

In the same capacitor widget, select different materials from the Dielectric menu and watch how the capacitance jumps up (especially water with κ=80!):

Where is it used? 🛠️

Quick Summary 🎁

Fun Fact 💡 — Your Phone Screen Is a Capacitor!

Ever wondered how a touchscreen knows where your finger is? A capacitive touchscreen is a grid of tiny capacitors. Your finger is conductive, and when it gets close to the screen, it changes the capacitance of the capacitors at that spot. The phone’s electronics detect this small change and pinpoint exactly where you touched. That’s why a regular glove doesn’t work — the glove prevents your finger from altering those capacitors 📱.
