A question: when you’re sitting in a car and the driver suddenly brakes, why does your body lurch forward? Nobody pushed you. Yet something invisible seems to pull you ahead.

This is exactly where Newton’s First Law comes in.

The Law in Plain Language

If something is at rest, it wants to stay at rest. If it’s moving, it wants to keep moving at the same speed and in the same direction — unless an external force comes along and disrupts things.

This is an intrinsic property of every object. It’s called inertia.

The Braking Car Example

Back to the sudden brake. Your body was moving at the car’s speed. When the car stopped, your body still wanted to maintain that previous speed. The seatbelt applies a force to stop that inertia — otherwise you’d hit the windshield at full speed.

Why Is It Newton’s “First” Law?

Before Newton, Aristotle argued: “a force is needed to keep something moving.” He thought without a force, everything would come to rest. Newton proved this wrong — a force is required to cause a change, not to sustain motion. This was an intellectual revolution.
